How long have you been in VACMS?
Around 4 years
What instrument(s) do you play?
I am a violinist. I dabble a bit on the piano, but not really enough to be useful for chamber music.
What are your other interests?
I rock climb and get outdoors a lot, which creates a bit of competition for music practice time! Also I work in Biotech/Biomedical research.
Why did you join VACMS?
I moved to Melbourne from NZ and didn't really meet anyone who was actively playing music for quite some time (but of course there was an endless supply of people who played "once upon a time"). I was googling various groups and thought VACMS had a nice concept and sounded fun. I also joined the Stonnington Symphony Orchestra around the same time. It's nice to have a balance between the big and small groups.
What have you enjoyed about being in VACMS?
No two play-in days are the same, as you always play with different people and different instrument combos. Also you get opportunities to play a wide array of pieces that would be difficult to put together ensembles for otherwise. I also like the flexibility of it, if I'm busy i can just sign up for a few sessions, and there is no pressure to prepare for them. Its fun to have a go and read through, and at some point I'm becoming familiar with a few "favorites" of the members. But when I have had more time I've been able to meet people through VACMS to play more regularly and properly work on a piece for a performance.
What are some of the event highlights?
I really enjoyed playing the Mendelssohn octet, we had a rather good line up for that one! Another highlight was the chamber orchestra put together for a Baroque session. Zoe Knighton's tutoring sessions have also been very worthwhile.
