ABOUT PLAY-INS
Play-ins are our main events, where everyone in VACMS can get together and play chamber music.
Play-ins are a great way to meet other chamber players. A number of VACMS members play together in self-organised groups in between Play-ins. Members annually receive a contact list to facilitate this.

WHAT IS A PLAY-IN?
VACMS has four Play-ins each year, which are all-day events on a Sunday. There are usually four 1¼ hour sessions that run from 10am to 4:30pm, with breaks between each session. You can register to attend as many sessions as you like. Players are grouped to play together, commonly in trios, quartets or quintets, but occasionally in larger groups or duos, and each group is assigned its own room. The grouping of people will be different for each session you attend. Players bring their own lunch, but morning and afternoon tea are provided.
Play-in invitations are emailed to members several weeks prior to the Play-in. Groups are organised approximately one week before the Play-in date, so you have the option of contacting other members of your groups before the Play-in if you wish to decide what to play in advance. Otherwise groups just choose something on the day to sight-read from the extensive VACMS library or from music someone has brought. Some players bring a touchscreen notebook with music already downloaded.
We do our best to group people appropriately at Play-ins according to the available attendees.

SPECIAL EVENTS AT PLAY-INS
We include a special event at many Play-ins, such as a masterclass, workshop, or an informal concert where groups can perform a piece they have been working on. Sometimes we might have a special focus for the day, or organise a larger ensemble to play for example an octet or a work for chamber orchestra.
These events are completely optional. Play-in attendees can elect to have a regular playing session if they prefer.

REGISTERING TO ATTEND A PLAY-IN
Several weeks before a Play-in members are emailed an invitation to register for the sessions they wish to attend. You have the opportunity to make certain requests, such as to play a certain work, or be grouped with certain people for one session. We will meet these requests if we can readily do so, but can give no guarantees. If you make a special request involving other players you need to ensure that they are aware of it and will be attending the Play-in.
The Registration Form is on the Next Play-in page.
"COME AND TRY" OPTION FOR POTENTIAL MEMBERS
Potential members who have not previously attended a Play-in can can attend on a "Come-And-Try" basis before deciding whether to join . Details at How to Join VACMS.
ATTENDANCE AS A CASUAL
Under special circumstances, such as a non-member being part of a group registered for a Play-in, non-members may register for a Play-in as a casual player. Casual fee is $30.
Certain instruments (e.g. brass, percussion, some wind) that cannot be accommodated in a VACMS membership may be useful additions from time to time for special groupings at Play-ins. Please contact us with your expression of interest.
